With updates to Google’s AI Mode, many news stories, rumors, and opinions have emerged about the feature. One of the most widespread theories circulating online is that AI Mode will replace the traditional Google search engine. In this article, we’ll discuss what official Google sources say about this topic.
Google’s AI Mode
According to Google itself, AI Mode is a new way to search on Google. This feature allows users to ask any question and receive an AI-powered answer, followed by further exploration with follow-up questions and helpful web links.
AI Mode utilizes Gemini (Google’s AI model), which possesses advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimodal understanding capabilities. In AI Mode, users can type, speak, take a photo, or upload an image. It’s important to note that AI Mode is specifically designed for complex questions, in-depth research, comparisons, or detailed exploration.
The difference between AI mode and traditional search
Google explains that traditional search returns a list of links, while AI mode offers a more advanced conversational experience, specifically designed for queries that require reasoning, exploration, or complex comparisons. With AI mode, people can ask complex questions that might previously have required multiple searches, from exploring a new concept to comparing options. According to Google, AI mode is particularly useful for queries that require deeper exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons.
Will AI mode replace traditional search?
According to official statements from Google (up to May 2026 on its official blog and in the words of its CEO, Sundar Pichai):
- AI mode is a separate experience, appearing as a tab or a specific mode.
- Google has said that successful AI features will be progressively incorporated into the main search experience through AI Overviews (summaries generated by artificial intelligence that appear at the top of Google search results).
- Google has not announced that it will eliminate traditional search with links. It continues to maintain both approaches (traditional search and AI mode).
Personal opinion
As we can see, AI mode and traditional search are distinct. At no point is it (officially) mentioned that AI mode will “replace” traditional search. I believe the problem stems from clickbait in some industry publications (which are not based on official sources) and from some people confusing AI-generated summaries (which appear in traditional searches) with AI mode (a completely different and independent function from traditional search).
In reality, both systems (traditional search and AI mode) complement each other, enriching the user’s search experience. Therefore, it doesn’t make much sense to eliminate or replace one system with the other, especially if these tools fulfill different functions and complement each other. Another point to consider is that Google’s advertising system (Google Ads) relies heavily on traditional search, so eliminating that traditional search system doesn’t make much sense.
