Why is choosing the right CMS the most important SEO decision?

Many companies and businesses that want to rank their websites or online stores make the SEO mistake of choosing the wrong Content Management System (CMS). In this article, I will explain why this decision is one of the most important for SEO.

Advantages of using a CMS

Among the main advantages of a CMS compared to other types of solutions are the following:

– Ease of use (does not require advanced technical knowledge).

– Lower operating costs.

– Centralized and efficient content management.

– Greater compatibility and SEO standards.

– Quick design and customization.

-Specialized support and updates.

Most used CMS platforms globally

While there are several CMS alternatives on the market, the most used globally (2025-2026 period) are the following:

-WordPress 42–43%, the undisputed leader in the sector.

-Shopify 5.0–5.1%, holds second place, especially regarding online stores.

-Wix 4.1–4.3%

-Squarespace 2.4–2.5%

-Joomla 1.3–1.4%

-Drupal 0.7–0.8%

-Webflow 0.9%

Personal Experiences on the Topic

In my personal experience as an SEO professional, I can say that the CMS with the most SEO potential is WordPress, followed by Shopify (valid only for online stores). At a different level (far behind) are Joomla and Drupal (due to their low popularity and limited up-to-date support), and lastly Webflow (due to its low popularity and certain SEO limitations). The CMSs I don’t recommend (since, from my point of view, they have too many SEO limitations) are Wix and Squarespace, for example. Whenever I have clients using these CMSs, I recommend they migrate to other, more SEO-friendly tools like WordPress or Shopify.

Why is choosing the right CMS the most important SEO decision?

Choosing the right CMS is the most important SEO decision because of the various implications this decision has in the medium and long term. For example, if a business decides to use Wix for its website, it might take twice the effort (and twice the time) to rank well, especially compared to a WordPress website, which puts it at a serious disadvantage against competitors. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose the CMS that offers the best future prospects.

To understand this point, consider our child: choosing a CMS is like choosing the school our child will attend. It’s a very important decision that will ultimately influence many aspects of their life: academic, social, mental, and in some cases, spiritual. If our child attends a bad school, will they be able to succeed? The answer is yes, but they will have fewer opportunities and be less competitive compared to other children who attended better schools.
